The Kahu (named after the Australasian Swamp Harrier) is a handcrafted low-whistle in the key of C major, based on my very popular Kakapo. The Kahu is an octave lower than C whistles like the Clarke or Generation, its bottom note corresponding to 'middle C' on a piano.

NB: This is a big whistle and is not recommended for beginners. The Kahu features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering. With the offsets and use of the 'pipers grip' the Kahu can be played even if you have relatively small hands. The offsets on the tone holes are configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Kahu with opposite offsets. Note also that I sell a tone-hole key to make the D hole easier to reach, also listed on my website.

Features of the Kahu are as follows:

  • These whistles are tough, made from aluminum and PVC.
  • Unlike many Al whistles, the wall thickness is only 1mm, so it is nice and light
  • The Kahu is tuneable +/- about 30 cents.
  • The mouthpiece is my well-proven PVC and wood design with the curved lip giving a distinctive tone
  • They feature a small gold painted molded plastic bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave
  • Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • Range is two octaves, C4 to D#6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud!
  • My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles
  • Each whistle features the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand.

Besides the key of C, the Kahu whistle is easily played in dorian mode (the scale starting on D), in F by half-holing the B and of course Am. Instruction sheet included, they are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. You can watch a demo on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afl9fjTSwak.

Delivery time is typically less than two weeks. Tone hole key is extra, not included in this listing. Sorry, Kahu bird not included ;-)

The Ruru Green (named after a New Zealand native owl) is a tuneable version of my Ruru, a handcrafted low-D PVC penny whistle in the key of D major. The tuning slide allows for fine tuning the pitch by about 30 cents each way.

These whistles are tough, made from PVC. They feature a small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher notes. They also have a curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone. Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.

NB: The Ruru Green is a big whistle and is not recommended for beginners. However, it does feature carefully designed offsets on the tone holes that makes it easier to play for those who play with their right hand below their left. Let me know if you play with left hand below your right and I will custom make a whistle with the opposite offsets - at no extra charge!

The range of the Ruru Green is two octaves, D4 to C#6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! Besides the key of D, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on E), in G by half-holing the C# and of course Bm. My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. They are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. A demo of the basic Ruru whistle is on SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/john-poletti/low-d-whistle-demo-after-the-goldrush

The Toroa (named after the Southern Royal Albatross) is a handcrafted tuneable low penny whistle in the key of B major. The tuning slide is for fine tuning and allows the pitch to be shifted about 30 cents each way.

This is a big whistle and is not recommended for beginners. The Toroa features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering. With these offsets and use of the 'pipers grip' the Toroa is easier to play than you may think, but may still be a challenge for some. NB, the offsets are configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. The Bluebird is a handcrafted alto flute (penny whistle) in the key of G minor pentatonic (four holes). The scale is the one used by native american flutes and works well for native american music, plus some blues, jazz and rock styles.

The Bluebird features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering for small hands, made easier still by using the first and third finger of each hand. With these offsets the Bluebird can be played by beginners and children (aged about 10+). NB, the offsets are configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Bluebird with opposite offsets.

These flutes are tough, made from PVC. They feature:

  • A small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher ones.
  • A curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone.
  • Accurate concert pitch, carefully hand tuned to A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • Range of two octaves, G4 to F6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud!
  • Offset holes to make it easier to play, but will still be difficult if you have small hands.
  • A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles.
  • Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand.
  • Shipped in a triangular package which is very strong.

A fair bit of work and trial and error went into developing this instrument! The Sonny is a tribute to all the Blues Musicians of the same name, quite a few including of course Sonny Terry. The Sonny plays the basic Blues scale, with some extra notes that are very useful. The coolest feature of the Sonny is that the 7th note is at the bottom, where you’ve wished it would be so often. Ever tried playing ‘Blowin in the Wind’ on a standard whistle?

The standard Blues scale is usually 1, 3, 4, b5, 5, b7, which needs only 5 finger holes. So, the Sonny has an extra hole to get the 2 (an F#) and also a thumb hole to get the 6 (a C#). So the scale playable on the Sonny is:

E F# G A A# B C# D

With a few tricks, there are a few more ‘accidentals’ that are quite useable. The 7 (D) is a long way below the E and is quite difficult to reach, so the Sonny features a tone hole key like a clarinet or sax. And to add to the coolness factor, the tuneable feature allows the head unit to be fitted either way up. Normal like a penny whistle, or upside down, like a clarinet.

A demo of the Sonny is on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnYCRnK0SjE

Sorry, CD not included!

The Areta is based on the Indonesian suling instrument as played in gamelan orchestras. The Areta has been designed to approximate the gamelan scales, but to be in tune with equal tempered instruments such as the piano.

The slendro scale has five tones. For the Areta in G, the five notes are G, A, C, D, E. Since the Areta is equal tempered it can be used to play a surprising range of western music. For example note that the slendro scale is a version of the A minor pentatonic scale. Consequently, the Areta can be used to play the blues, with the advantage of having a seventh note available below the tonic. It also has the correct notes for some Celtic music, for example ‘Mull of Kintyre’!

The Areta approximates the suling's bamboo and rattan construction by having a wooden disc fitted at the mouthpiece, with the PVC cut away for the windway. A PVC clip simulates the rattan ring and is held firmly in place with small rubber bands such as loom bands or hair bands. Spare bands are provided with your Areta. The position of the clip can be adjusted slightly to alter the tone of your Areta.

Note: One photo shows both versions of the Areta. This listing is for the Slendro version.

Note: My instruments are usually shipped within three business days and delivery is generally within two weeks.

The Shikra is my take on the Ghanaian atenteben, a fully chromatic flute in the key of Bb. Like a recorder, it has a thumb-hole and also needs only two half-holed notes for the full twelve semitones. Unlike a recorder or a penny whistle, its bottom note is the maj 7th (A) and the windway is on the bottom instead of the top. A fingering chart is supplied with the instrument. Atentebens are usually made from bamboo, but my version is from PVC, so it is quite strong. The fipple design is similar to that of my penny whistles and the Shikra also adopts their small bell.

Features:

  • A curved lip like a classical flute giving a distinctive tone.

  • Each Shikra is hand tuned to concert pitch and is even tempered

  • The range of the instrument is just over two octaves, A4 to Bb6

BTW the Shikra is named after a small migratory bird of prey found in Ghana among other places.

Note: My instruments are usually shipped within three business days and delivery is generally within two weeks. Sorry, Shikra bird, guitar and violin not included.

At Last! Now you CAN play those unreachable low whistles! Some of my customers have had difficulty reaching the lowest tone-hole of my low C and low D whistles. The issue is not unique to my instruments, since the hole position is determined by physics, not aesthetics or practicality. For some time I have been experimenting with a key, similar to those on a saxophone or clarinet and have managed to arrive at a design that works well. The key clips on to most whistles or flutes with OD from 25mm to 28mm, such as the Shearwater Low-D. It stays firmly in place, yet is easily adjustable and seals as well as your finger. The action is as fast as my fingers can do a trill. You can see a demo on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJTURmAlG8I

If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Toroa with opposite offsets.

These whistles are tough, made from PVC. They feature a small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher ones. They also have a curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone. Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.

The range of the Toroa is two octaves, B3 to A#5, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! Besides the key of B, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on C#), in E major and C# minor by half-holing the A# and of course G# minor. My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. • Slight adjustment of the front chamber position can control the tone of the instrument
  • A curved edge for the lip of the windway, giving a distinctive tone

  • A small gold-painted bell/horn to improve the volume of the lowest notes of each octave
  • A hand carved comfortable wooden mouthpiece

NEW Just released, my brand new design, a quenacho inspired flute. The Ezi-Quenacho was inspired by the traditional Andean end-blown flutes widely known throughout South America. The traditional quenacho can be frustrating to learn, because of the difficulty of blowing the end notch accurately and consistently. Hence the Ezi-Quenacho! It is cross between a quenacho and a penny whistle. It has a thumb hole like a quenacho, which helps to get the higher notes more in tune and to get at least some notes of the third octave. My Ezi-Quenacho has a traditional styled foot with a stopped down diameter.

NB,This is a big flute and is not recommended for beginners. The Ezi-Quenacho features a carefully offset 'E' tone hole to simplify fingering. With the offset and use of the 'pipers grip' the Ezi-Quenacho can be played even if you have relatively small hands. The offset on the E tone hole is configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Ezi-Quenacho with opposite offset.

The Ezi-Quenacho is in the correct key of D major (D = 293.7Hz) and has an easily playable range of two octaves. The fingerings for notes of the third octave are included in the instruction sheet, but I do not guarantee you will be able to play all them. You can hear a demo of the Ezi-Quenacho on SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/john-poletti/ezi-quenacho-demo-little-drummer-boy, accompanied by the Gibson SG and Vox AC30 in the photo. These whistles are tough, made from PVC. They feature a small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave octave compared to the higher notes. They also have a curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a more distinctive tone. Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. Range is two octaves, Eb4 to D5, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! Besides the key of Eb, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on F), in Ab by half-holing the D and of course Cm. My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. They are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. You can see a demo of the almost identical Low-D Ruru whistle on YouTube here.

New Product The Aroha was inspired by the traditional Maori flutes that were played before the arrival of Europeans in New Zealand. Aroha is the Maori word for love and you could certainly play this flute for romantic purposes! The design of the Aroha is based on my North American style flute, and it uses the G Pentatonic minor scale. By the ingenious addition of an extra note the Aroha will also play the C Pentatonic minor scale. Furthermore several tritonic and tetratonic scales are available some of which include an evocative sounding semitone. Because of the two-chamber design and unique fingering the Aroha can be used for many traditional musical styles, such as American Indian, Maori, Andean, Inuit, African, Indian and Russian. The Aroha flute features a Takahe totem in recycled native Tawa timber, a small bell/horn, decorative tassels in traditional Maori colours and a comfortable mouthpiece, with a stylized Maori tatoo (moko). The Aroha sounds very similar to the instrument in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuIqxKytsO0&t=2s

New Product The Ezi-Quena was inspired by the traditional Andean end-blown flutes widely known throughout South America. The traditional quena can be frustrating to learn, because of the difficulty of blowing the end notch accurately and consistently. Hence the Ezi-Quena! It is cross between a quena and a penny whistle. It has a thumb hole like a quena, which helps to get the higher notes more in tune and to get a few notes out of the third octave.

The Ezi-Quena is in the correct key of G major (G = 392Hz) and has an easily playable range of two octaves. The fingerings for notes of the third octave are included in the instruction sheet, but I do not guarantee you will be able to play all them. You can hear a demo of the Ezi-Quena on SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/john-poletti/takahe-flutes-ezi-quena-demo-el-condor-pasa

The Areta is based on the Indonesian suling instrument as played in gamelan orchestras. The Areta has been designed to approximate the gamelan scales, but to be in tune with equal tempered instruments such as the piano.

The pelog scale has seven tones. For the Areta in G, the seven notes are G, G#, A#, C#, D, D#, F. The pelog Areta has these seven tones, but the tone holes are not all actually reachable! In practice, Indonesian musicians generally choose five of the seven available notes. The most common subsets are named bem and barung. Pelog bem skips tone holes three and seven, whilst pelog barung skips holes one and four. To change between scales, the Areta features a clip that can be used to block one of the tone holes, either three or four. The other hole is skipped by being always closed by the appropriate finger.

The Areta approximates this suling design by having a wooden disc fitted at the mouthpiece, with the PVC cut away for the windway. A PVC clip simulates the rattan ring and is held firmly in place with small rubber bands such as loom bands or hair bands. Spare bands are provided with the Areta.

Note: One photo shows both versions of the Areta. This listing is for the Pelog version.

Note: My instruments are usually shipped within three business days and delivery is generally within two weeks.

The Mohua is named after the delightful but endangered native bird, AKA the Yellowhead. The Mohua is a soprano C-whistle made primarily from aluminium. It has a quite different tone to the Clarke or Feadog whistles, because of its curved windway lip. This whistle is tough, made from Al with a 1mm wall thickness. The mouthpiece is wooden, with a laminated plywood cover, which reduces the amount of condensation compared to whistles with a metal cover. The copper painted bell is moulded from plastic.

Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, C=523Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. Range is two octaves, C5 to B6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud!
